" I am excited to meet a group of inspired people, who have done and continue to do a lot, and thus, hope to learn from this rich collection of experiences, abilities and skills from different part of the world that would otherwise be almost impossible for me to access. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Spacer Project
The Spacer Project aims to provide patients from low-income backgrounds with COPD affordable, home-made spacers to improve the efficacy of disease management. The project primarily serves patients from economically disadvantaged communities.
So far, the project has produced and supplied 240 home-made spacers to Webuye Clinic, with a goal of reaching 500 by December 2025. All spacers were distributed free of charge to patients. In addition, a workshop was conducted at Tumaini Innovation Center to educate youth on COPD and the production, use, and cleaning of home-made spacers. Educational materials were also produced and shared with healthcare providers at events such as the FAMSA 2025 Conference and the York University Conference, aligning with the project’s goal of raising awareness and building knowledge around COPD management.
About the Millennium Fellow
Ibrahim Kalema is a young man hailing from Mombasa, Kenya, currently a final year student, studying medicine in Moi University. For as long as he can remember, he has been interested in trying to improve on various societal issues, which has manifested as a dabble in various projects, some to completion, and others, not so successful. If he had his way, he would have preferred to do it from the backstage, without being the face of all the projects he takes part in. But more than the direct impacts of the project, what those experiences have taught him is the importance of leadership and organisational skills, which is what inspired him to apply to the Millennium Fellowship Program.
