" "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
The life I have the privilege of leading today is because I was born into it. Under different circumstances, I could be leading a very different life, robbed of the chance to reach my full potential. This realisation made me empathise and understand the plight of all those children out there that haven't even had access to primary schooling, or those adolescents, parents and elderly that aren't educated about their health. There is no telling how a simple effort on your part could change their life and the lives of their family for the better. That is the crux of why I want to be a part of this initiative and why I couldn't be more grateful to be a Millennium Fellow and be a more upstanding and helpful member of society. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Menstrual Health for All
We are hoping to start a project that focuses on educating women regarding menstruation. In a country like India where a large portion of the underserved population remains unaware of the impact menstrual practices have on health, we hope to take the first step in educating these women regarding the physiology of menstruation and the use and disposal of various menstrual products through interactive sessions organised in our college. With the increasing stigma associated with periods, we hope to make girls more comfortable with the idea of menstruation. As access to sanitary pads is difficult in the rural areas, we hope to bring attention to the various government initiatives that offer free access to the products. Finally, we would also like to focus on menstrual hygiene practices and the signs which are concerning enough to necessitate a visit to the doctor.
About the Millennium Fellow
Akshita Kanala has been meticulous, focused and driven since an early age. The zeal to be involved in the betterment of society led her to pursue a medical degree so that she could serve them as a doctor one day. However, that isn't all that she wants to do for her community. Since her schooling days, Akshita has been passionate about educating those that haven't had access to the resources that she's grown up with. Be it academically or education regarding the health of all, she has wanted to be a hands-on participant in making a change. Not only has this Fellowship granted her a chance to take the first step in achieving this dream but has also given her and her colleagues an insight into the importance of Sustainable Developmental Goals so that they may continue to work on it in the future.
