Millennium Fellowship Project: SafeFlow Initiative
Many women and girls face the challenge of period poverty in Nigeria. And according to ICIR in 2022, over 37 million women of reproductive age cannot afford menstrual hygiene products. A 17-year-old teenage girl residing in Dei-Dei shared her struggles saying “Except people give it to me, I do not use pads. My aunt cannot afford it, so she taught me how to fold clothes for my period.” The likes of such stories motivated us to start the SafeFlow Initiative. Our mission is simply to educate young girls and women in local communities in Abuja about proper menstrual hygiene and its impact on overall health, to reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation and also to distribute free pads to those in need. By doing this, we hope to make a difference and change the statistics, one pad at a time, while raising awareness about an issue a lot may take for granted. Through the SafeFlow Initiative, we aim to improve the awareness and practice of menstrual hygiene, reduce stigmatisation, and create a supportive environment for girls and women to manage their periods, and equip young girls yet to have their periods for the journey ahead.
