" “I'm so excited to be a Millennium Fellow, to have a platform to make an impact and the support of such a wonderful foundation. It gives me the freedom and power to discover new projects and new passions, to connect with amazing like-minded people all over the world. More than that, it gives me the tools I need to do what I have always wanted to do, which is help people.” "

India is home to over 20 percent of the world’s blind population, barely acknowledged as able people with the capability to learn and grow. A big part of this is that our population is so big that they tend to be overlooked and at best given mobility aids. But what about education? What about a way to write and read and learn? Of course, there are Braille Slates, cheap and portable, but they aren’t very good for those with limited dexterity, or if one wants to write for a long time, an important aspect of education. A Braille typewriter, on the other hand, is great, but it’s heavy, bulky, outdated, and most importantly, too expensive for the average Indian citizen, blind or not. After reaching out to government NGOs, I found that the price of one single typewriter was anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 rupees. Compare that to the average daily wage of a factory worker, ranging from 300 to 600 rupees. I want to create a newer version of this typewriter, 3D printed and lightweight, which can be mass produced and shared to the various NGOs in India, or sold to the public for as cheap as possible.
