Millennium Fellowship Project: Achieving Gender Equality Through Basic Health Education

In Pakistan, Maternal mortality ratio is 155 per 100,000 live births and preterm birth complications is the 4th leading cause of death among women. As part of the Millennium Fellowship 2025 under the Millennium Campus Network (MCN), Ms. Minal Abid, student of BS Public Health (Sem IV) serving as the NUMS Campus Director, decided to initiate a community-driven project titled “Achieving Gender Equality Through Basic Health Education” along with her volunteers, as they believed by educating women on these health topics we can reduce health risks to a greater extent.
This project spans over three visits held in October and November 2025, covering the slums of I-12 Islamabad. In the first visit the students meet the underserved women population and understands the local problems that they were facing regarding their health. The second visit was focused on raising awareness about maternal and child healthcare and menstrual hygiene to help young women take informed health decisions and make smart health choices. In addition, hygiene kits were distributed to promote personal hygiene and improve overall well-being. The last visit was about evaluating the effectiveness of this project and getting feedback from the community.
The focus was on fostering self-confidence, independence, and awareness among young girls, enabling them to lead healthier, empowered, and more equal lives. These sessions encouraged open discussions, awareness, and community engagement, paving the way toward achieving gender equality through health empowerment.
This project aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4,5) fostering equality and providing quality education.
