Millennium Fellowship Project: DAYAN
Project DAYAN, or Documenting Abuse and Yielding Aid for the Neglected, focuses on addressing the ongoing issue of witch hunting in parts of Jharkhand. Women are often falsely accused of practicing black magic or being “witches,” driven by superstitions, personal grudges, or property disputes. These accusations lead to horrific violence, isolation, and trauma for the victims. The project aims to document survivors' stories to shed light on the human impact of witch hunting and to raise awareness about this issue. We organize workshops in affected communities to challenge harmful superstitions and educate people about their legal protections under the Prevention of Witch-Hunting Practices Act, 2001. In collaboration with local NGOs, we work to provide survivors with legal and psychological support, helping them navigate the legal system and rebuild their lives. As law students, we see it as our responsibility to empower communities with knowledge, fight the stigma surrounding this issue, and stand up for the rights of those targeted. Our vision is to create lasting change by breaking the cycle of violence and fear. Through education, advocacy, and support, Project DAYAN strives to ensure that no one has to endure the pain and injustice of being falsely labeled a witch.
