" I've always been passionate about empowering those around me, especially people from underprivileged backgrounds. Growing up as an American-born-Chinese, I've noticed that policymaking tends to undermine Asian Americans in policymaking. But I believe that every voice should be valued and I hope that through my efforts, I can do something special and bring positive change to those who are struggling. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Researching Climate Resilient Affordable Housing in Chinatown

NYC Chinatown deals with more displacement these days. It also has aging infrastructure and bigger climate risks coming up. My project focuses on getting climate-resilient housing that people can afford. This kind of housing protects longtime immigrant residents, especially seniors, from gentrification and environmental threats. I plan to back community efforts in a few ways. They want to grow government funding. They aim to make tenant protections stronger. They also hope to fix up local buildings and infrastructure. All this happens while keeping Chinatown's cultural identity intact. I will do fieldwork and engage with residents. I will work with local organizations too. From that, I can create a policy report. It will have practical recommendations for lawmakers. As an Asian-American student in New York, I stay committed to fixing these inequities. I advocate for changes that last.

About the Millennium Fellow
