Millennium Fellowship Project: Clean Energy Transition Model
The Was Mitad Transition Model is an independent project led by Millennium Fellow Muna Ahmed, focused on promoting sustainable household energy use and improving the livelihoods of Ethiopian women. Traditional injera baking stoves, known as mitads, consume large amounts of firewood or electricity, create heavy indoor smoke, and require long hours of labor. These burdens fall almost entirely on women, affecting their health, time, income, and overall well-being.
This project is designed to support women’s transition from traditional stoves to the Was mitad, an energy-efficient alternative that significantly reduces fuel use and improves cooking conditions. The initiative works through community awareness sessions, demonstrations of the improved stove, and guidance on accessible financing options. By partnering with local women’s groups, microfinance providers, and community leaders, the project aims to create a structured, culturally grounded pathway for households to adopt the Was mitad.
Ultimately, the Was Mitad Transition Model seeks to empower women through reduced household labor, improved indoor air quality, and increased economic stability while advancing sustainable energy practices in rural communities. The project highlights the importance of women-centered design and the role of clean household technologies in building healthier and more resilient communities.
