" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it allows me to deepen my commitment to social justice and immigrant advocacy, a passion rooted in my own experience growing up in a mixed-status family. My project focuses on supporting asylum seekers by helping conduct evaluations to prepare them for their asylum applications and assisting them in obtaining work permits so they can access decent and honest jobs while rebuilding their lives in the United States. I believe that this work is not only about legal processes but about advancing dignity, stability, and belonging. Through this fellowship, I hope to continue creating pathways for immigrant communities to find refuge and ultimately to thrive. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Asylum Aid Project

In conjunction with the legal team at an immigration organization in Brooklyn, New York, I volunteer to support their community members with asylum applications and work permit applications. For the past two years, I have been volunteering at this organization aiding in their transformative community projects that aim to not only uplift immigrants but also give them opportunities to thrive and grow. Through my work with asylum seekers, I have been able to help this vulnerable group begin their journey in starting anew in the United States. These appointments consist of carefully and concisely documenting their legal paperwork, translating, filling out applications and paperwork, and empathetically asking them about their personal experiences that necessitate an asylum status. Through this fulfilling project, I am able to make a tangible and meaningful impact on an global issue that I have a personal connection to as a daughter of two Hispanic immigrants.

About the Millennium Fellow
