" We are all citizens of our shared planet; taking care of our environment is thus our most imperative priority. I'm excited to be a Millennium Fellow to do my part in both directly helping the ecosystem my campus resides upon and educating other local students on how they may continue these efforts in their own home communities. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: COAST: Coastal Outreach, Action, Stewardship & Training

This project essentially is comprised of two parts: 1. an education component (using webinars) to increase coastal environmental awareness in our local community and 2. a physical hands-on component where we organize a beach cleanup open to the entire campus. This individual project tackles two of the most pressing issues facing urban beach cities such as the one our campus in Le Havre faces. While our beaches may provide a source of tourism and revenue for our city, they also attract excess waste and pollution which may adversely affect the local environment. At the same time, there are not very many educational opportunities offered for children and students regarding environmental protection. This project tackles both of these challenges at the same time by creating an initiative that allows for student volunteers to teach about sustainability whilst learning from one-another and then applying that new knowledge with in-person beach clean-up efforts.

About the Millennium Fellow

Tyler Jaewon Kim is a rising second-year student studying in the dual Bachelor of Arts degree program between Columbia University and Institut d'études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po Paris). He was born in Seoul, South Korea and completed his primary and secondary studies in Southern California. Currently studying social sciences and political humanities in Le Havre, France, Tyler is excited to expand his perspectives and build upon his life-long interest in public policy. This has translated itself into Tyler's completion of two professional internship experiences this previous summer: first at the state level with the California State Assembly, and secondly at the federal level with the U.S. House of Representatives. Tyler aspires to explore future professional opportunities with the skills he'll acquire through the UN Millennium Fellowship with the eventual goal of applying to law school following the completion of his undergraduate studies.
