" "I am excited to join the Millennium Fellowship because it provides the ideal platform to advance my feminist project, ‘Her Voice Matters’. I can apply my research, communication, and teamwork skills in a meaningful way, while receiving mentorship and constructive feedback to strengthen my impact. I also look forward to collaborating with passionate change makers around the world to broaden my perspective and create greater change." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Her Voice Matters
I’ll create a project focusing on gender inequality and women’s rights. I’ll start this project with specific women in my community, and then move step by step from people around me to a bigger world. My project will use online and offline workshops and sharing sessions to empower women in the community. The workshop will be quite chill. Everyone in the workshop will read some parts of feminist books or watch a feminist movie together, then the lecturer will carefully interpret the content and extend the knowledge of feminism, and everyone will discuss and express their opinions freely. The sharing sessions are a good opportunity for women to share their stories and the challenges they have faced. They can not only open up conversations around women’s situations but also strengthen the emotional communication and support among women. Through these two ways, I want every female participant to feel heard and supported, ready to challenge inequality in their way. Some events will also be available to male members of the community because improvement doesn’t happen in isolation. By educating and engaging everyone regardless of gender in the community, I believe we can build a more supportive and gender-equitable environment.
About the Millennium Fellow
Jiayi Gu is a sophomore majoring in Finance at NYU Shanghai. Although she grew up in Shanghai, one of China’s most open and diverse cities, she has witnessed and experienced subtle yet persistent gender inequality. Studying in a traditionally male-dominated field has made her more aware of the gender imbalance in professional settings. These moments, ranging from being overlooked in discussions to seeing young girls step back from leadership, sparked her passion for feminism. Through her project, she aims to create inclusive spaces that amplify women’s voices, boost women's confidence, and challenge gender-based stereotypes within her community.
