" Oleophilic began with a simple question I kept asking myself: why do we ignore resources that could solve urgent problems? Seeing the damage caused by industrial oil spills and the waste of human hair in salons made me realize the two could be connected. I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it offers a space to grow this work beyond an idea, into a practical solution that contributes to both environmental sustainability and community resilience. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Oleophilic
Oil spills don’t just pollute water—they destroy lives. I’i've seen firsthand how industrial spills near coastal areas leave families without clean water, fishermen without income, and entire ecosystems choking on oil. What’s worse is that current cleanup methods don’t just fail—they’re harmful. Industries lose billions every year trying to manage spills using tools that waste up to 80% of the oil, rely on plastic and petroleum-based materials, and leave toxic residue behind. I couldn’t stay silent. That’s why I started Oleophilic. We take something simple—discarded human hair—and turn it into powerful oil-absorbing mats. Each mat can soak up to 5 times their weight in oil with 98% efficiency, and we’re able to recover most of that oil, giving it a second life. It’s cheaper, safer, and kinder to the planet. We’i've already piloted these mats and connected with several industries that are ready to make the switch. But this must go further. During the Millennium Fellowship, I plan to start production in Mangalore, creating jobs for local youth and women, cleaning coastal waters, and positively impacting over 2,000 people. My long-term goal is to expand Oleophilic globally and support developing nations in tackling oil spills with dignity and innovation.
