" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow, a transformative platform that will elevate my social impact by providing the tools, resources, and community to amplify my efforts in social justice and advocacy. As a sophomore at Spelman College, an all-women’s HBCU in Atlanta, Georgia, grounded in the mission of “A Choice to Change the World,” I am deeply committed to purposeful leadership. The Fellowship’s pillars of Convene, Challenge, and Celebrate resonate profoundly with my academic and professional goal of being a civil rights attorney. Guided by my mantra from Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” I use these words as a moral compass in my advocacy journey, shaping how I identify injustices, engage communities, and drive systemic change. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Honoring Our Sheroes: Social Justice in Action

As a Millennium Fellow and Spelman College Social Justice Fellow, I, Carrington Wash, founded Standing on the Shoulders of Our Sheroes: Social Justice Advocacy in Action, an initiative that celebrates the legacies of Spelman alumnae, trailblazers, and civil rights leaders featured in the Spelman College Social Justice Mural. The project uses art as a medium to amplify stories of resilience and advocacy, promoting reflection, dialogue, and empowerment. Standing on the Shoulders of Our Sheroes highlights how art and advocacy intersect to promote equity and awareness. The initiative transforms artistic recognition into purposeful engagement, using creative dialogue as a tool for collective growth and understanding. The project includes three core components of speaker events, student dialogues, and book colloquies. These efforts have encouraged students to reflect on how history influences their own activism. The project continues to deepen awareness of the importance of social impact while promoting the use of art as an essential instrument of justice and empowerment.
