" Why I do the work I do?I cannot say it's work but I do consider it as a calling, something that I love doing.I actually love it when people actually get empowered and more so women in this current situation of patriarchy evident in my community.I've seen it from my mother who had actually dared to dream but unfortunately her dreams were invalid when parental responsibilities set in.She was forced to give up her dreams because of us ,by my father who continued with his.On my realization to this occurrence ,I vowed to put up with everything I had to so that I can show the society women can have valid dreams. I am actually very happy to be accepted as a Millennium Fellows because it will give enough publicity to the work my friends and I have been doing,to show the world that women can be agents of change and that united women are a force to be reckoned with. We also look forward to hosting events which will allow union members to exhibit their products, discuss on emerging issues concerning their creative venture and look for tangible solutions for them, inviting speakers that offer their expertise in areas such as mental health issues and financial literacy advancing their knowledge on how to scale up for the market.
The events will take place tri annually and will be inclusive for the underprivileged in the community, fostering empowerment for them by teaching them how do various skills in different crafts and giving them a platform to display and sell their handmade products online hence a source of livelihood .This package also incorporates financial literacy and mental health advocacy amongst them thus making them to stay relevant in the market.
In order to advance such events, we cannot do it by ourselves, we need the help of sponsors and investors to make this idea of social impact a reality to the marginalized people in the community.
In the future we look forward to partnering with companies in China that manufacture yarn and other crafty materials. This will be an advantage that comes to those who are part of the union since the price market of crafty materials in Kenya currently quite expensive.
The creatives will receive yarn at a subsidized price since we will have made an agreement with the yarn manufacturers and the creatives.
Better yet we look forward to manufacturing different types of yarn in Kenya using organic waste materials obtained locally. We will also have our young people take part in the manufacturing process hence it will be a create a source of employment for them. Organic materials obtained locally and knowledge to make yarn will also be fetched locally. This will also aid in reducing pollution and advancing SDG 12 and 13.
