" I am deeply passionate about sustainable agriculture in rural areas of Kenya, with a focus on land reclamation and creating meaningful jobs for youth and local communities. I believe that empowering people through sustainable practices not only strengthens food security but also fosters economic growth and resilience. Being a Millennium Fellow excites me because it offers a collaborative platform to amplify these efforts, align them with the SDGs, and create a lasting impact for communities that need it most. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: AI Powered Sustainable Agriculture & Youth Training Farm

The AI-Powered Sustainable Agriculture and Youth Training Farm in Limuru, Kiambu County, Kenya, is a six-month pilot initiative launching in January 2026, spearheaded by Teddy Nyamongo in partnership with the International Sustainability Summit and the Technical University of Kenya, aimed at transforming a five-acre demonstration site into a resilient, tech-driven hub that integrates artificial intelligence (AI), drone-assisted precision farming, biotechnology, GIS mapping, rainwater harvesting, and surplus food storage to combat climate variability, land degradation, and youth unemployment in a region where agriculture employs 70% of rural households yet faces 20% post-harvest losses and erratic rainfall causing frequent crop failures. By deploying IoT sensors for real-time soil and water monitoring, multispectral drones for pest detection and yield prediction, drought-tolerant GM crops like Bt maize and hybrid potatoes, and climate-controlled silos to store up to 500,000 liters of water and surplus produce, the project targets a 25-30% yield increase, 40% reduction in losses, and training of 150 young people aged 18-35—prioritizing 50% women—in climate-smart practices, agribusiness entrepreneurship, and disaster preparedness through hands-on workshops, field schools, and mobile apps for market alerts. Aligned with Kenya's Vision 2030, the Big Four Agenda on food security, and UN SDGs 2, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 15, this KES 25 million (USD 200,000) venture not only reclaims degraded peri-urban farmlands for high-value horticulture like kale, potatoes, and tea but also fosters scalable models via policy roundtables, digital knowledge hubs, and MEL frameworks using SERVIR satellite data, ultimately creating 100 direct green jobs, empowering cooperatives for value-added exports, and positioning Limuru as East Africa's agritech innovation beacon for replicable resilience against food insecurity and socio-economic shocks.
