" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it gives me the platform to scale Herbert’s Fruit Shakes beyond just a business, turning it into a force for youth empowerment and healthy living. I do this work to prove that with vision and dedication, young people can create sustainable change in their communities while inspiring others to dream bigger. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Herbert's Fruit Shakes

Herbert’s Fruit Shakes is a youth-led agro-processing and healthy beverage enterprise based at the University of Buea, Campus A. The business was founded to respond to a growing need among students and young professionals for nutritious, affordable, and convenient food options in a context where fast foods and sugar-heavy beverages dominate the market. By leveraging fresh fruits sourced from local smallholder farmers, Herbert’s Fruit Shakes transforms raw agricultural produce into blended fruit beverages and smoothie-based snacks that support health, energy, and everyday wellness.
The project is grounded in the principles of agroecology, circular value creation, and youth economic empowerment, shaped significantly through insights and training from the UN PAFO–FAO Youth Mentorship Programme. Through the mentorship, Herbert’s Fruit Shakes refined its business positioning, strengthened its financial planning model, and integrated sustainability practices into product development and distribution. This learning clarified the business vision: to build a scalable, community-rooted enterprise that adds value to local agriculture while improving nutrition and creating jobs.
The business model is built on three key pillars:
1. Product Value Addition: Fresh fruits are processed into smoothies, shakes, and wellness blends, all produced under hygienic, consistent, and standardized quality procedures.
2. Customer-Centered Distribution: Sales are currently concentrated on-campus through direct retail points, delivery to student hostels, and pre-order systems. This high-density market provides reliable demand and a scalable base.
3. Youth and Farmer Empowerment: The enterprise sources raw materials directly from rural farmers, building stable supply chains while empowering student vendors through commission-based sales.
