" Courage and empathy, guided by a passion for education, drive my leadership and work. Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship will strengthen these qualities through collaboration and learning. The skills I gain from the Millennium Fellowship will make my social impact on students and communities more meaningful and align with UNAI principles and SDG 4. I am excited to build my anticipatory competence by envisioning new ways of empowering students through inclusive leadership and education. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Leadership Empowerment for Advancement and Development

Project LEAD (Leadership Empowerment for Advancement and Development) is an initiative dedicated to empowering students—especially those who feel unheard or uncertain about their potential—to develop strong leadership, communication, and civic engagement skills. The project is built on the belief that leadership is not a position but a responsibility to create spaces where every voice matters.
Project LEAD will provide students with the tools and confidence to express themselves through three main components:
1. Leadership & Communication Workshops
Practical training sessions focused on public speaking, emotional intelligence, teamwork, and problem-solving—designed to help students gain the courage to speak and lead.
2. Mentorship Pairing Program
Students are paired with faculty members, senior students, and professionals who guide their academic, personal, and leadership growth. This builds a community of support and accountability.
3. Civic Engagement & Impact Hub
A platform where students collaborate on projects addressing real community issues, encouraging active citizenship and advancing SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Through these pillars, Project LEAD aims to cultivate confident, ethical, and socially conscious student leaders who can influence positive change on campus and beyond. By the end of the program cycle, participants will demonstrate improved communication skills, stronger self-belief, and greater involvement in community development initiatives.
Ultimately, Project LEAD seeks to ignite a culture where students recognize the power of their voices and use their leadership to uplift others—creating a ripple effect of empowerment across the University of Cape Coast and the wider Ghanaian student community.

About the Millennium Fellow

I believe leadership begins with courage-the courage to speak, to serve, and to inspire others to do the same. My name is Maxwell Boansi, a history major student at the University of Cape Coast in the central region but I reside in Koforidua, Ghana. I am an aspiring professor whose journey has been defined by helping others discover the power of their voice.
In my first year, I watched brilliant course-mate remain silent in a discussion, not because they lacked ideas, but because they doubted their voice mattered. That moment never left me. It taught me that leadership is not about titles, but about creating spaces where others feel seen, heard, and empowered. That moment shaped my belief that education must go beyond classrooms; it must build confidence, equity, and opportunity for all.
This conviction has shaped my service through multiple roles as a leader even as president of RESAG(Religion Students’ Association of Ghana) under the Faculty of Arts and as course representative for several classes. It also inspired Project LEAD (Leadership Empowerment for Advancement and Development), an initiative that equips students with leadership and communication skills, pairs them with mentors, and builds a hub for civic engagement on campus.
Beyond my roles, I mentor peers, engage in debates, and thrive in team sports, which strengthen my resilience and collaboration. My vision is to grow into an a global icon as an ethical leader and professor who empowers the next generation to believe in themselves and lead change in their communities.
