" The Millennium Fellowship allows me to take on a project that fills the gaps left by an unequal system. Empowering students who once doubted their academic potential, showing them that they, too, can attend university and pursue ambitious careers, is the calibre of work I am honoured to be a part of, and I look forward to working with other like minded Fellows in working towards shared SDG goals. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: The Identity, Power and Language Access Project

The Identity, Language and Power Access Project is an outreach initiative designed to expand access to the languages and humanities for sixth-form students from underrepresented backgrounds by introducing them to the intellectual, cultural, and social possibilities of studying languages at university. Grounded in UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, the project brings students onto the UCL campus to participate in a curated series of workshops led by university staff and trained student volunteers. These sessions explore themes such as the Spanish exile in London, linguistic power dynamics in Haiti, and feminist approaches to translation, offering students an accessible yet authentic insight into university-level study. By spotlighting language as a site of identity, culture, and power, the project challenges narrow, grammar-focused understandings of language learning and instead presents the humanities as a space of critical thinking, global awareness, and personal growth. The programme aims not only to strengthen students’ confidence and cultural literacy, but also to widen participation by demonstrating that higher education is a space where they can belong, thrive, and pursue ambitious futures.
