Millennium Fellowship Project: Re-Human
Loneliness has become one of the defining social challenges of our era—an invisible crisis with profound emotional and physical consequences. Described as a “silent killer,” it now affects an estimated one in six people globally, with the World Health Organization linking chronic loneliness to over 871,000 deaths each year. In the United Kingdom, the issue is especially acute: in 2025, 79% of university students reported severe loneliness, a stark contrast to the 5–13% average across OECD countries.
Despite its scale, loneliness remains taboo, endured quietly, internalized, and rarely addressed directly. For international, minority, and LGBTQ+ students, this isolation often deepens through displacement, cultural barriers, and fear of stigma. Studies have connected loneliness to insomnia, anxiety, and emotional fatigue, symptoms that are most pronounced after midnight, when the city grows quiet and individuals retreat into private struggle.
Re-Human: London After Hours responds to this crisis by transforming late-night hours, traditionally associated with isolation, into opportunities for connection, rest, and care. Through its flagship Night Café Series, Re-Human establishes calm, inclusive, late-night spaces where students can gather, study, share food, and find community without pressure or expectation. These spaces are intentionally designed to foster belonging, emotional visibility, and mutual support.
Operating at the intersection of wellbeing, culture, and social innovation, Re-Human reframes loneliness not as a personal failure, but as a collective imbalance, evidence of a society advancing technologically while neglecting its human foundations. The initiative positions emotional sustainability as essential to academic and social success, cultivating environments where empathy is valued alongside ambition.
The project aligns with: SDG 3: Good Health & Wellbeing - prioritising mental health as a cornerstone of thriving communities and UNAI 4: Global Citizenship & Cultural Diversity - strengthening connections across backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. Re-Human advocates for a city that flourishes through care.
It seeks to prove that true progress is measured not only by innovation or achievement, but by the strength of the relationships that hold communities together.
