Millennium Fellowship Project: Aratrika
Aratrika, which translates to the lamp that dispels darkness, is a not for profit project that aims to combine art and social good together. It started with selling self made art pieces and using the profits to help and uplift the backward communities of women artisans. It was able to generate a revenue of Rs.20,000 in the first two months of operations. As the project matured, it was then expanded by including a community of women artisans from Punjab under it's umbrella and providing the required aide in designing and selling hence creating demand avenues and income opportunities for them. By being a Millennium Fellow, I aim to scale this project by taking under its ambit the backward community of women artisans, who otherwise face undergo extreme struggles financially, by uplifting their craft in all aspect to maintain their dignity and create opportunities for them. By making them aware of the skills that they possess and uniting them under a common umbrella organization, this project aims to make them self sufficient and their business sustainable in the long run, hence giving them a sustainable livelihood.
