" Being able to have a platform to share my knowledge and skills with people on a broader platform as well as having the honor of learning from like-minded people is particularly exciting for me. Can't wait to delve into issues pertaining to deaf education in Ghana and try to find solutions to them . "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Deaf Access Initiative

As a teacher of the Deaf and a university student in the field, I have observed how inaccessible Ghana's education system is for Deaf students. The curriculum is predominantly hearing-centered, from its content to the individuals delivering it. My project focuses on bringing stakeholders in Deaf education together to dialogue for better education for the Deaf and to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing communities in Winneba.

About the Millennium Fellow

Benjamin Martey Korley is a quirky, fun-loving 29 year old from the Republic of Ghana currently studying for a B.Ed. in Special Education at the University of Education, Winneba. Born and raised in Accra, Ben has always been inspired by the colorful of mix of cultures and people that form the very fabric of life of the capital city. The last of seven children, Ben has always had to fight to be heard and this can be seen in all his endeavors. Being passionate about championing the rights of people, Ben has worked with various organizations including the Peace Corps of USA to shed light on current issues that plague deaf education in Ghana. Upon completing his degree, Ben hopes to pursue an MPhil immediately in Special Education as well as continue to champion for quality, accessible Education for all deaf persons.
