" Having a great passion for something and having being granted a platform to turn that passion into action is a thrilling experience. Not because I get to benefit but because I get to be a part of an organisation that genuinely seeks to advance the community and bring change. Being a person who thrives in such settings, I am most excited about joining the Millennium Fellowship because I have the privileged to be in an integrated system of learning, engaging and applying what I have learnt for the betterment of someone else, and nothing compares to that. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: SusOnTheGo
The aim for this project is to address the issue of waste management and to support mostly unfunded students through a dynamic approach. Through the deployment of recycling bins in our university campus and residences, we aim to collect such recyclables like cans, cardboard, paper, etc. by collecting them we seek to seek to then take these recyclables and sell them to factories that recycle and reuse these things. It is through the selling of these recycled goods that we would be able to fundraise funds to assist students in our university who are currently unfunded and are struggling to keep up in school due to these financial constraints. By approaching corporations within our city, specifically those who deal with food and clothes, we would work hand in hand to redress this issue. In partnering with food banks to redistribute surplus food to those in need, we could also address the issue of poverty lurking within the small community in our residences or rather the university.
About the Millennium Fellow
The life of Nosipho Yende is truly one that lies in the depths of having an ear of societal despair. Born from humble beginnings, Nosipho Yende, is a 21 year old, doing her third year in the bachelor of laws degree at the University of Fort Hare. For as long as she can remember, publicly advocating for the marginalised community has been her passion. From doing presentations in the assembly during primary to joining certain organisations that sought to give back to the community. And this time in life she is choosing to be the voice for the voiceless once more.
