" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because this is an opportunity to turn ideas into real and positive impact, connect with change makers, and grow as a voice for good health and fairness in my community. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Home of Health Initiative
My name is Sarah Imiehon Akhihiero. I am currently in my fifth year in pharmacy school at the University of Benin in Nigeria. Though I grew up in a Christian home, I was also part of a dysfunctional society where conflicts, emotional distress, ineffective communications, unhealthy relationships and inconsistent friendships were and still are a norm. I have been involved in several social impact projects aimed at promoting health, mostly physically but rarely emotionally. This made me decide almost a year ago to actively reach out to individuals going through emotional challenges, including those who are going through a rough time or are psychologically distressed due to family or personal trauma. Thus, my project, THE HOME OF HEALTH INITIATIVE, stems from my passion to address the issue of psychological struggles and lack of emotional support, especially among adolescents. It is aimed at improving a healthy state of mind and wellbeing in people as well as creating a unifying bond among members of a family. It also provides a safe space, which I would rather call a home, where people can anonymously or openly share their unpleasant experiences and reconciliation stories and find community support and emotional healing.
