" I believe stigma is one of the most silent yet devastating epidemics of our time, one that strips away dignity long before it denies care. My work exists at the intersection of research and advocacy, reclaiming dignity for those whose voices have been dimmed by prejudice. The Millennium Fellowship offers a rare space to merge science, empathy, and global collaboration, enabling me to design solutions that do more than treat illness but restore humanity. I am excited to stand alongside peers who believe, as I do, that inclusion is not an afterthought but the very foundation of care "

Millennium Fellowship Project: SOCIAL ANXIETY NIGERIA: SPEAK, LISTEN

Have you ever felt your heart race when you're asked to speak in public? It could be just friends and family or classmates, yet speaking feels like a burden. Some call it shyness but social anxiety is more than just shyness. It's a challenge that lives among us and make everyday interaction feel like an exam. Our project hopes to explore what social anxiety really is, why it happens and how to manage it among secondary school students, especially because these young ones are in their formative years and must take charge of their lives. My team and I hope to create this awareness through our community service project targeting secondary school students, where we would talk about how social anxiety can shape friendships, academics, self-confidence, and ultimately, how you can overcome it, adopting practical strategies that have worked for us. Understanding the role teachers can play in increasing social anxiety levels in these students, especially in our Nigerian setting, we would also organize a training session for them to help build kinder vocabulary, and engage the students in confidence-building exercises like debates and quizzes. Our project hopes to groom bolder and more confident people to lead the next generation.

About the Millennium Fellow

Lydia Efobi is a final-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a growing body of work at the intersection of psychosocial health, stigma reduction, and public health research. As an intern at PeCHIVReT (Person-Centered HIV Research Team), she supports research that uplifts vulnerable populations affected by HIV/AIDS, particularly by exploring the psychological impact of stigma and the barriers it creates to care and healing.
A Young African Leader Initiative (YALI ) alumna, mental health advocate, and award-winning book reviewer, Lydia brings a nuanced, human-centered lens to her work, drawing on her experience reviewing over 100 books and being recognized by 20+ authors worldwide for her depth, empathy, and attention to detail.
Her leadership role as Editor-in-Chief II at ISPOR-HEOR UNN speaks to her commitment to scientific rigor and student empowerment, while her advocacy reflects a broader goal: to ensure that mental health is not sidelined in disease-focused care, but actively integrated, especially for key populations who are often silenced or stigmatized.
Lydia is passionate about harnessing research, writing, and youth collaboration to advance Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to good health and well-being (SDG 3) and reduced inequalities (SDG 10). She welcomes opportunities for collaboration in research, youth-led initiatives, and global conversations that center healing, not just in the body, but in the mind.
