Millennium Fellowship Project: Catch Them Young

My Millennium Fellowship project (Catch Them Young) in support of the SDG 4 ( Quality Education) focused on supporting children from low-income backgrounds, especially those in public schools who have little or no access to the internet or basic digital tools. Growing up, I understood how challenging it can be to lack exposure to technology and essential 21st-century skills, so this project was my way of giving young students the opportunities I once wished I had.
Together with my team consisting of three other Millennium Fellows and four dedicated volunteers, we planned and carried out a full-day outreach program in a public school. Our goal was simple but powerful , to introduce children to the world of technology, build their confidence, and equip them with foundational digital and leadership skills that can shape their future.
During the outreach, we taught over 60 students various skills, including basic computer operations, how to navigate the internet safely and effectively, and simple technology concepts that can spark their curiosity. We also introduced leadership and communication skills, helping them learn how to express their ideas, work in teams, and believe in their abilities.
The sessions were interactive and practical. We didn’t just talk, we allowed the students to practice what they learned, ask questions, and engage in activities that made the learning fun and relatable. The students were excited, eager, and deeply involved, and the teachers gave us a warm welcome and full support throughout the day.
To assess their understanding, we ended the outreach with quizzes, games, and question-and-answer segments. It was heartwarming to see how much they had learned within such a short time and how confidently they participated.
This project was more than just teaching; it was about empowering young minds who rarely have access to such opportunities. It reminded me of the importance of giving back, creating equal chances, and ensuring that no child is left behind simply because of where they come from. Engaging with these students strengthened my resolve to continue advocating for digital literacy and leadership development among children in underserved communities.
Overall, the project was a meaningful experience for both my team and the students, and it reaffirmed my commitment to building a generation of confident, tech-savvy, and purpose-driven young leaders.

About the Millennium Fellow

Abdulrazaq Iyiola is a Nigerian scholar, changemaker, and advocate for youth empowerment through technology, education, and innovation. He has been recognized among Nigeria’s Top 100 Changemakers by NGSDGs, a FATE Foundation scholar, and one of the top 150 fellows in the TBP Class of 2024. As the driving force behind Creavate Tech, he designs initiatives that equip young people with skills to thrive in the digital age while fostering leadership and social impact. Currently studying Biochemistry at the University of Lagos, Abdulrazaq blends academic excellence with extracurricular influence, driven by a vision to inspire transformation and create sustainable opportunities for individuals and communities.
