Millennium Fellowship Project: Community Based Initiatives for Breast Cancer Awareness

Our Millennium Fellowship project focused on breast cancer prevention and education among adolescent girls in Nigeria. Recognizing the rising burden of breast cancer in the country and the gaps in early detection awareness, especially among young females, we designed a community-based initiative aimed at empowering secondary school students with accurate, age-appropriate, and practical knowledge on breast health.

Our primary intervention site was Charpel Secondary School, Ilorin (Kwara state)where my team member and I conducted a structured health education outreach. The session included interactive discussions on breast cancer risk factors, warning signs, myths and misconceptions, the importance of early detection, breast self-examination techniques, and healthy lifestyle habits that can reduce long-term risk. We used visual teaching aids and demonstrations to ensure students understand key concepts and could confidently apply them.

The project was designed to promote early awareness, encourage health-seeking behavior, and build a foundation for long-term preventive practices among adolescent girls. By engaging with students directly in their school environment, we created a safe space for questions, corrected misinformation, and equipped them with practical tools for monitoring their breast health.
