" I'm driven to combat youth-onset hypertension – an emerging public health concern – because I believe healthy young hearts are key to a thriving, sustainable future. As a Millennium Campus Fellow, I'm excited to amplify my impact, sharpen my skills, shape public health reforms pertaining to cardiovascular health, and promote SDG 3 through my 'Youth Hypertension Awareness and Prevention Campaign,' thus empowering young people to take control of their cardiovascular health and well-being before complications arise unexpectedly . "
Millennium Fellowship Project: BEAT HYPERTENSION CAMPAIGN
The Beat Hypertension Campaign is a community-centered health initiative focused on raising awareness about hypertension among young people, within my university community and neighboring communities. Through multilingual education, fitness-based engagement, school outreach, and digital advocacy, the project aimed to make hypertension education more relatable, accessible, and culturally inclusive – while targeting the United Nations SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being) under target 3.4.
The campaign featured five major components:
•Incentivised Multilingual Video Challenge using 4 Nigerian local languages (Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin) to break language barriers and promote hypertension awareness through the youth, but for all.
• Jog for Health, a fitness event promoting physical activity and heart health amongst the University of Ilorin campus students. It's now being considered as a core part of the University of Ilorin, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Sport Committee's activities — to bolster pharmacy students engagement with the Saturday jogging routine.
• School and community sensitization, including health talks on hypertension risk factors, stress management, and healthy habits for both the teenagers and teachers of the targeted Secondary school in Ilorin.
• Digital advocacy such as an online hypertension risk Self-check quiz, Instagram reels, WhatsApp broadcasts, and LinkedIn posts.
• Participation in the University of Ilorin 50th Anniversary Health Outreach organized by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where the team assisted with BMI checks, blood pressure checks and other tests, community mobilization, health education, and pamphlet distribution on stress management alongside our lecturers and partner organizations like the Society for Family Health.
Through these activities, the campaign connected with 500+ students and community members, empowering them to know their risk, make healthier choices, and engage with public-health information in a culturally relevant manner.
