" “I believe stories are powerful tools for transformation. My passion for African literature and improving reading culture is driven by the conviction that children who read widely can imagine and create better futures. Becoming a Millennium Fellow excites me because it offers the opportunity to amplify this work, collaborate with like-minded change makers, and align my efforts in underserved schools with the UN principles and Sustainable Development Goals.” "

Millennium Fellowship Project: PROJECT READ to LEAD

Read to Lead is a literacy project aimed at improving the reading culture among children in rural and underserved communities in Kwara State. The primary purpose of this project is to see children who had no access to books fall in love with reading them, so that their horizons can be broadened and they can be exposed to the opportunities the world has for them. Through engaging storybooks, interactive reading activities, and book donations, the project promotes SDG 4: Quality Education by helping young learners discover the joy and value of reading.

About the Millennium Fellow

Kolo Dorathy Manaefia is a final-year Physiotherapy student at the University of Ilorin who combines her academic discipline with a strong commitment to advancing reading culture in Nigeria. Born to two teachers, she grew up immersed in books and developed a lifelong passion for African literature, recognizing its power to shape perspectives and broaden possibilities. Beyond healthcare, she aspires to champion literacy initiatives in underserved communities, particularly in Kwara North, where she hopes to inspire primary and secondary school children to embrace reading as a tool for empowerment and social mobility.
