Millennium Fellowship Project: Mindful Campus Initiative
Our project is a comprehensive student-led project designed to address the critical and growing mental health challenges on campus. History and observation show that students are significantly affected by issues like depression, anxiety, and stress, exacerbated by factors such as academic pressure, poverty, and relationship difficulties (heartbreak). As it stands, we have lost over 5 students to suicide hence the urgent need of this project.
Our multi-faceted approach includes awareness campaigns (seminars, posters), creative expression events (Mind & Mic Open Night), direct peer-to-peer outreach (door-to-door), and the establishment of a sustainable online support platform. Our mission is to create a university environment where mental health is openly discussed, support is readily available, and no student feels alone in their struggle.
We extended our project to secondary school students to spread awareness of mental health and to prepare them for career choices and university life so as to minimize stress in University.
About the Millennium Fellow
I am Usher Nicholas, a fourth year student at the University of Malawi, studying Arts in Humanities majoring in English Literature and Language with minor in Philosophy and classical studies.
Since the beginning of my study at the University, I have been involved in numerous social activities which have been empowering my fellow students to withstand both academic and extracurricular pressures. For instance, in 3rd year of my study I joined a certain organization called Education for Change which provide guidance and counseling to students on how to combat complex circumstances during their studies like depression, financial issues and frustrations. Moreover, for almost a year, I have also been working with CareerAd connect consultants as a junior editor whereby I used to guide my fellows on how to find latest jod vacancies and academic updates. At this position, I managed to handle numerous cases from more than 200 individuals of which it was a difficult task to handle.
To accelerate my leadership skills, I have been attending and participating different trainings conducted by various consultants during my study at the University. To mention a few, in 2024 and 2025 I managed to participate in Data Analysis and Transcription training, Human Resource Management training, and also training in Excel. All these workshops have trained me in different areas to be a good leader and also provides excellent techniques on how to navigate overwhelming situations.
