" Inclusion and accessibility, fueled by advocacy, sensitization and innovative thinking, drive my work as a special educator and interpreter. Being part of the Millennium Fellowship will strengthen these skills through collaboration and shared learning. The knowledge and experience I gain will make my social impact in schools and disability communities more practical, measurable, and aligned with the SDGs. I am eager to expand my ability to anticipate future challenges by designing new approaches to inclusive education and communication. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: CHRISDAN SIGNS

CHRISDAN SIGNS is an accessibility and inclusion initiative designed to address the critical lack of Sign Language services at the University of Uyo. For years, students and children with deafness within the university community have faced significant communication barriers. They struggle to access lectures, classroom discussions, campus events, and general academic support because there are no structured interpreting services available to meet their needs.
As a result, Deaf learners are often excluded from academic engagement, miss important information, and experience avoidable educational inequality.
CHRISDAN SIGNS was created to bridge this gap.
The project focuses on teaching Sign Language, creating awareness on Deaf inclusion, and volunteering professional Sign Language interpretation across university programs. Through consistent service, advocacy, and capacity building, CHRISDAN SIGNS aims to ensure that every person with deafness at the University of Uyo can participate fully in academic, social, and intellectual life.
This project is providing support, education, and accessible communication for Deaf learners. The long-term vision is to institutionalize Sign Language interpreting services in the University of Uyo, promote equal access to education, and empower Deaf students to succeed without barriers.
