" I am excited to be a part of the Millennium Fellowship because it offers the skills, mentorship, and like-minded community I need to bring to life my childhood passion (one that has grown with me) of creating life-changing impact in mental health. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: My Mind and Me

This project focuses on promoting mental health awareness among students in secondary schools as well as within the Mental Health Department at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where I currently train. Our goal is to tackle the persistent stigma associated with mental health. By the end of the project, we hope the individuals we engage will be better informed about where to seek help when experiencing emotional distress. We also aim to support and motivate those who have already taken the step to consult a medical professional. To achieve this, my team and I plan to visit secondary schools to discuss the importance of reaching out for help during emotional distress. Addressing bullying will also form an essential part of our outreach. Since many schools have inactive or absent counselling services, we will work on sensitizing school administrators to the importance of having a fully functional and accessible counselling unit. At the mental health clinic, many patients remain hesitant about treatment due to societal stigma. We plan to set up support groups to connect individuals facing similar mental health issues. In addition, we will administer questionnaires to assess the mental health status and health care seeking behavior of individuals.
