" Being a Millennium Fellow will give me an opportunity to make social impact. Here, I am sure to build community, gain skills and share what I know to other people. I have always been passionate about mental health. People don't pay enough attention to it, especially in my part of the world. As a fellow, I can contribute more in bringing the attention of those in my local environment to these issues. Hopefully, I will be able to make a difference in somebody's life at the end. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: My Mind and Me
The project is centred around mental health awareness among students in secondary schools and at the mental health department at the teaching hospital where I train - University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. It sets out to tackle issues and stigmas that surround mental health. At the end of the program, we expect that those we have reached out to will be able to know the right quarters to access help when they are dealing with anxiety issues, depression, suicidal thoughts. We also want to encourage patients who have taken the bold step to see a doctor. I and my teammates plan to achieve this goal by visiting secondary schools and telling them about the importance of seeking help, when they feel anxious or depressed. Speaking against bullying will also be a focus of our project. The counselling unit in most schools is not functional. School administrators will be enlightened on the need for having an active one. At the mental health clinic, many patients are still skeptical about receiving care. This is as a result of the societal stigma related to mental health issues. We would create support groups for this individuals who face similar mental health challenges.
