Millennium Fellowship Project: Generation Zero

The project, generation zero which was formed, with the aim of reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Akwaibom over the next coming years through a public awareness system, that target secondary schools was a success.
It is no news that HIV has a very high prevalence in Akwaibom state, we were able to identify this and decided to come up with a plan that addresses this problem from the root.
We hoped to ensure that the next generation gets amped up with knowledge, and become clear on how to prevent HIV/AIDS hence reducing it's prevalence in the state.
To do this, we decided to educate the secondary school students on HIV/AIDS, set up clubs within the schools to help propagate the knowledge, and provided our contacts to ensure that we follow up the clubs we had set.
We targeted the youths with age ranging from 15-20 yrs, schooling in the local community especially those who haven't really been exposed to outreaches of this kind.
We carried out sensitization through announcements and teaching. We learnt on what they knew about HIV prevention using questionnaires and we engaged them.
The outreach team consisted of 19 team members , a public address system, a projector, a laptop and refreshments.
About 150 people attended and participated well and they all learnt a lot.
However, we faced some challenges, the principal one being that our projector developed some faults and so we had to stop projecting and the students had to rely on just listening to us...
Also, we planned to reach out to two schools but we didn't get to do that and so in case of next time we have resolved to reaching out to the principal of these schools earlier so we can get their approval earlier on.
In conclusion, the project really did increase awareness and I am sure that this will go a long way to ensuring the drastic reduction in the incidence of HIV/AIDS in Uyo.
