" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it gives me the opportunity to turn my passion for fighting health inequity into meaningful action, alongside peers who share the vision of a more just and compassionate world. I hope to also gain skills that will help me align my goals with the SDGs, especially SDG 3. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Smiles Unhidden- A Cleft Awareness Initiative
It is a project aimed at spreading awareness on cleft conditions. We were able to spread awareness on cleft conditions through social media, especially instagram
We organized a cleft connect event that brought people who had cleft conditions together to connect, give each other support, and take a breather.
The event was a success, and the parents were encouraged and showed readiness to spread awareness on cleft conditions and advocate for their children.
We could have had more activities to engage the parents and adults.
About the Millennium Fellow
Shirley Ngetich is a medical student in Kenya who has always been passionate about helping others. Over the years, she has been able to experience and understand in depth, the injustices and inequalities that come with poverty and she is dedicated to contributing towards changing this for the better. She is especially committed to tackling the inhumanity that is health inequity, because she believes that access to healthcare should never be dependent on a person's financial status. Every step she takes in medicine is guided by the hope of bringing us closer to that reality.
