Millennium Fellowship Project: St Dorothea Community

Project Name: St Dorothea Community SDG Focus: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being.
Project Description.
St Dorothea Community is a community-driven health initiative based in rural eastern Uganda that aims to bridge the critical shortage of healthcare professionals and improve access to quality, affordable healthcare services. Through a combination of community health education, free mobile health outreaches, youth training in basic clinical and emergency skills, and the establishment of a sustainable community health-worker network, the project seeks to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality, increase early disease detection, and empower local residents—especially women and youth—to take active roles in promoting health and well-being in their villages.
Key activities include: - Monthly mobile health camps offering screenings, basic treatment, and referrals - Training 50+ community health volunteers and youth in first aid, maternal & child health, nutrition, and NCD prevention - Health literacy campaigns on prevalent conditions (malaria, hypertension, diabetes, maternal health) - Building partnerships with local health facilities and the Ministry of Health to strengthen referral pathways By training and deploying local champions while delivering direct services, St Dorothea Community is creating a scalable, replicable model that brings sustainable health improvement to underserved rural areas and contributes directly to Uganda’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage and reduce health inequities.
