" Socioeconomic barriers to STEM education sidelines talented young minds that could be helping push forward scientific innovation. It is my goal to reduce these barriers and expose more of these students to the possibilities they have. I'm hopeful the Millennium Fellowship will give me the opportunity to form impactful connections and amplify my mission through its incredible community. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: The Cell Initiative

The Cell Initiative develops room-size biolaboratories in high schools across the greater Philadelphia area. We call these labs our Cells! Each Cell creates a fostering environment like their namesake units of life. Cells are not only developed for independent professional research; they are also designed to encourage collaboration, love of learning, curiosity, and mental health safety. Each Cell is composed of three sections for (1) biochemistry, (2) biotechnology, and (3) ecological research. Working with existing school resources, our team designs approaches to economically provide specifically curated experimental equipment for advanced research. These spaces also have aesthetic elements to promote relaxation and stress-free project development. This includes plant life (also for ecological experimentation), whiteboard spaces (to facilitate collaboration), and soft lighting. Our commitment further extends to schools that we collaborate with. We design academic resources for educators to teach necessary research skills for using the equipment we provide. We hope our approach will kindle an excitement for science – I remember science became my favorite subject as early as elementary school, specifically because of experiments I did like bottle terrariums. At a higher level, this experiential learning should continue. This is what the Cell Initiative is all about!
