" I feel privileged to be chosen as a Millennium Fellow, as this elite opportunity sits squarely within my steadfast dedication to promoting sustainable development and social impact. The Fellowship offers a unique platform to work alongside similar-minded leaders, broadcast innovative solutions, and create real momentum for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. I'm especially enthusiastic for using this opportunity to advance my own work in medical field and public health, as I strongly hold the view that collaborative, mission-minded leadership can solve our world's problems. Working together, we can translate vision into reality and create enduring, life-changing impact. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Healing Garden
The Healing Garden: the project overview Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1 in 8 people (12.5%) live with a mental health condition, and 1 in 4 people will experience a mental illness at some point in their lives. In Rwanda, the Rwanda Mental Health Survey (RMHS) reveals that mental health conditions are highly prevalent among youth, with rates ranging from 10.2% to 20%. Despite this, mental health awareness remains low, and many individuals live with untreated conditions due to stigma, lack of knowledge, and limited access to mental health services. Visiting psychiatrists is not a common practice, and there is a lack of accessible institutions to provide guidance and support. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that, in Rwanda, medical solutions often focus solely on physical health, overlooking the importance of mental and emotional well-being. To address this gap, we will develop a digital platform to provide psychological therapy, raise awareness, and identify individuals with severe symptoms for referral and further treatment. Such an initiative would help bridge the divide between mental health needs and available resources, offering a scalable and accessible solution to a growing problem.
