" As a future doctor, I belief that true healing combines ancestral wisdom with modern science. By being a part of this fellowship will help me to bridge these worlds through research, teamwork, and cultural humility essential skills for any physician. Together, we can create healthcare that honors tradition while embracing evidence, improving lives in Rwanda and beyond. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Traditional medicine in modern world
My project works to preserve Rwanda's traditional healing knowledge before it is lost. Many skilled traditional healers are elderly, and their valuable knowledge of local medicinal plants is not written down.
I partner directly with these healers in my community to build trust and carefully document their wisdom. I record the plants they use, noting their scientific names to ensure accuracy, and how they are used for healing.
My goal is to bridge this traditional knowledge with modern medicine. By connecting healers with doctors and researchers, we can work together to create a healthcare system that respects our cultural heritage while using science to validate and improve these traditional practices for everyone's benefit.
