Millennium Fellowship Project: Books & Butterflies

Books & Butterflies aims to create a positive association with reading for elementary and middle school children, particularly those of lower socioeconomic status. This first step of this project entails the installation of Little Free Libraries, providing new books free of charge to children, right in their neighborhoods. One of our stakeholders, a student organization at the University of South Florida, named Care for Company at USF has provided the funding necessary to purchase the kits to build the libraries. We chose local parks in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods where these libraries would be installed, with approval from another stakeholder, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful. The second step of the project will be to partner with the College of Education at USF to create a campus-wide book drive where USF students can join our cause in alleviating educational disparities in our own community by donating books that can be used to fill these libraries. The third step of this project will be to recruit volunteers, ideally bilingual students. The final step will be to host weekly events at one of the parks, where volunteers will read with children and do engaging activities, such as crafts, to promote reading analysis, while providing companionship!
