" I am passionate about creating positive social change and promoting equity within my community. Compassion and understanding drive my efforts to serve underprivileged children and enhance literacy. Being a UN Millennium Fellow allows me to continue growing as a leader and connect globally with others who share this vision, strengthening my ability to make a meaningful impact. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Books & Butterflies

Priya Desai, Afreen Khan, and I created “Books & Butterflies”- a project focused on improving literacy for children of lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This involves establishing Little Free Libraries within the Tampa community, specifically at public parks that are located near lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. This process is made possible as we are backed by Keeping Tampa Bay Beautiful, who provide help in obtaining necessary permits, and Care for Company, a student organization we are involved with that holds the budget for a project of this scope. In addition, we will host a book drive with the College of Education to help us not only create a campus-wide initiative, but also in filling the libraries with books. We plan to recruit volunteers on campus to join us in each of these steps and the final step as well. Lastly, we plan to host weekly events at one of the parks for children close by to engage with the reading material. Through this project, we make reading more accessible by bringing it directly to neighborhood parks as well as engaging and community-based to associate the development of reading skills with a positive experience. This coincides with the UN’s fourth SDG, quality education.
