" Since moving to Toronto, I've been actively seeking ways to make my work more impactful at all levels by incorporating global perspectives that can deepen and refine my projects. I'm truly excited to be part of the Millennium Fellowship and to learn from such a diverse and inspiring group of peers and mentors. I already know this experience will help me grow—not only in the work I do, but also in how I see myself as a global citizen and community member. I'm very grateful for this opportunity and look forward to the journey ahead! "
Millennium Fellowship Project: SCARS (Sexual Crisis Assistance Resource Service)
The Sexual Crisis Assistance Resource Service (SCARS) expedites police and government engagement with university students by providing resources on sexual violence prevention. The idea came about in a discussion between first-year undergraduate students sharing their experiences with gender-based violence at the University of Toronto. They all felt the same way: in a time of crisis, they were unaware of which resources to use. Upon further research, we found that in the past four years, sexual assault has increased by 52% in Toronto. Additionally, 1 in 10 women are likely to be sexually assaulted at a post-secondary institution, placing them at the highest risk of sexual violence in Canada. Through QR code stickers, SCARS centralizes Toronto police, university, and government resources into a mobile-accessible page. This offers survivors or supporters readily available resources for emergency situations. Stickers will be distributed during orientation events, club meetings, and classes alongside online channels like social media. Students can then put these stickers on laptops, phones, or water bottles. In times of need, our initiative seeks to recast ‘scars’ as a gateway for much-needed prevention, education, and healing.
About the Millennium Fellow
Suneet Bains is an engaged and compassionate undergraduate student at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs. She is pursuing a double major in Public Policy and Peace, Conflict, and Justice, with a minor in Political Science. Originally from the small town of Bancroft, Ontario, Suneet’s upbringing has shaped her strong sense of community and commitment to social equity. She enjoys spending time outdoors—especially hiking and canoeing—and has worked extensively in rural healthcare and social services. These experiences have deepened her understanding of the systemic barriers that many communities face across Canada. Driven by a desire to create meaningful change, Suneet has conducted research on Indigenous education and gender-based violence. Most recently, she served as a development intern with a non-profit organization supporting survivors of domestic abuse. Suneet hopes to get further involved in research -which she has always loved- and wants to pursue a career in public policy, particularly in consulting or emergency management. Her long-term goal is to give back to communities like her own, helping to build systems that are more inclusive and resilient.
