" I am passionate about empowering immigrant populations through health education. Being a Millennium Fellow will also allow me to collaborate with like-minded people to become a stronger leader and achieve my goals of expanding knowledge of basic practices for good health in those populations. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Educating to Health

My project, Educating to Health, aims to increase health education among Latinx immigrants in the Nashville community. This initiative is important because Latinx immigrants are often at a greater risk of various diseases due to many living in poverty and unsafe conditions, therefore leading to a lack of education. They are not provided with the resources to gain knowledge regarding the significance of nutrition, hygiene and early signs of health problems. I plan to partner with centers for immigrants in Nashville such as the Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE) to implement a local program providing engaging lessons focused on health risks and the importance of nutrition and hygiene. There will be donation drives to create hygiene kits, informational pamphlets both in English and Spanish, cooking classes teaching them to make simple, balanced, nutrient-rich meals and locations of local parks where they can walk, play sports and build community. This program will hopefully break the cycle of a lack of health education among Latinx immigrants in Nashville and provide them with a strong understanding of ways to live a healthy and balanced life.
