" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because I want to grow as a socially adaptable leader, learning from the diverse experiences and perspectives of my peers. I believe real change begins with asking the right questions and understanding ground realities. This fellowship is a chance to not only sharpen my awareness of the root causes behind challenges but also to collaboratively channel our skills into building meaningful solutions. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Buddies for Badlav

In my university, nearby government schools, and the PG where I stay, I’i've noticed that people are aware of issues like waste, poor recycling, and unsustainable habits—but awareness rarely turns into action. Despite attending workshops, many still don’t change their behavior. I realized the real gap is not knowledge, but the lack of support, motivation, and guidance to take meaningful steps. My project aims to bridge this gap by creating a buddy system for social change. I’m building a group of student volunteers from my university who are ready to take small but consistent actions. We’ll start by understanding what stops people from acting, then co-create simple plans with them, and stay connected to offer support as they follow through. We’ll focus on three areas for now : 1.Help PG owners and residents learn how to segregate and recycle waste properly.2. Visit nearby government schools and make sustainability fun by teaching students how to turn waste into useful or beautiful items. 3.Build a community of volunteers by matching their strengths—like teaching, organizing, or designing—to real-world actions.

About the Millennium Fellow

Tanmayee K M hails from Shimoga, Karnataka, where her early years in a fully funded residential school shaped her sense of discipline, community, and empathy. Now pursuing her undergraduate degree in Computer Science (Data Science) at Vidyashilp University, Bangalore, she continues to carry those values into her work. Her journey has been about more than academics — from leading community-focused research with grassroots organisations in Bihar and Kolkata, to experimenting with AI for healthcare, education, and social good. Tanmayee’s curiosity drives her to explore how emerging technologies can create meaningful change, while her grounding in small-town values keeps her solutions people-centred. Beyond research and projects, she thrives in leadership and service roles — whether as a student leader at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, a core member of her university’s Placement & Preparation Cell, or as a volunteer translator and organiser in youth programs. Rooted in her hometown yet shaped by global experiences, such as the Aspire Leadership Program and Karta Initiative, Tanmayee envisions building inclusive AI-powered tools that empower underserved communities, nurture critical thinking, and make opportunities accessible across diverse geographies.
