" I am passionate about addressing educational disparities and leveling the playing field for students from historically underserved populations, which is why I have partnered with Collegiate Foundations to help these students access free tutoring and college application mentoring services that will aid in their academic success. As a Millennium Fellow, I am excited to bring more awareness to the existing inequities in our education systems and empower others to help bridge the gap and support disadvantaged students as they pursue their academic goals. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Collegiate Foundations

I am part of the team that promotes equitable access to higher education. As a mentor with the organization Collegiate Foundations, I assist first-generation, low-income students in achieving their higher educational goals. Many students are either not able to go to college or are at risk of dropping out because they lack the essential skills to succeed in college. The mentoring program offered by Collegiate Foundations seeks to bridge this gap by providing mentoring services to these students. At Collegiate Foundations, we guide students through classes that they are struggling with in school as well as with general English comprehension and study skills. Additionally, we assist students with standardized testing, college applications, financial aid applications, organizational skills, and communication skills. The mission of Collegiate Foundations is to ensure that every student is able to fulfill their goal of pursuing higher education.

About the Millennium Fellow

Karissa Lonon is a senior University Scholars major at Baylor University studying biology, chemistry, medical humanities, and sociology. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, she grew up serving with local philanthropies and subsequently became interested in supporting academic readiness and success initiatives to help students in grades K-12 reach their full potential. Karissa is passionate about addressing educational disparities through Collegiate Foundations, a Houston-based nonprofit, where she tutors students from underserved populations and guides them through the college application process. Karissa plans to attend medical school and hopes to compassionately serve her patients and community in the future by advocating for underserved patient populations and implementing community health initiatives to address sociodemographic determinants of health.
