Millennium Fellowship Project: The SODOTO project

SODOTO is built on the long-respected principle in Medicine: the See One, Do One, Teach One philosophy. It involves observing a problem, taking actions to solve it, and teaching and writing about the results.
The SODOTO project aims to address the multifaceted challenge of inadequate access to healthcare information and services, particularly in marginalized communities. Our passion for addressing this issue is rooted in a profound desire to bridge the gaps in healthcare access, reduce health inequalities, and promote medical knowledge and social responsibility. This initiative aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals).
In many parts of the world, especially in marginalized communities and rural areas, access to quality healthcare services remains limited or inaccessible. This results in preventable health issues and the perpetuation of poverty cycles. Additionally, high healthcare costs and the absence of affordable options deter individuals, particularly those in low-to-middle-income social classes, from seeking medical care. This financial burden further exacerbates health disparities. Also, a considerable portion of the population lacks access to credible healthcare information, leading to misconceptions and unhealthy practices. The absence of quality information hampers the empowerment of individuals to make informed decisions about their health.
We are passionate about these challenges for several reasons, one of which is humanitarianism. The core of our passion is a commitment to humanitarian values. We believe that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, and we are dedicated to alleviating suffering and promoting well-being. Also, we believe firmly in the power of knowledge. We are passionate about spreading medical information and fostering medical literacy, empowering individuals to take control of their health. Our passion is further reinforced by the conviction that healthcare should not only be a privilege but a shared responsibility. We are enthusiastic about engaging the community and promoting medicine as a social service.
By bringing free healthcare closer to marginalized communities and promoting affordable, quality healthcare for the low-to-middle-income social class, we actively contribute to the achievement of SDG 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. Our emphasis on knowledge dissemination aligns with SDG 4's mission to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

About the Millennium Fellow

Victor Mokwe is an aspiring activist and a medical student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka with a die-hard knack for proficiency and excellence. Outside his keen intellectual enthusiasm, he is interested in STEM and cutting-edge research and publications in the medical field with overlaps in literature.
Victor is passionate about service and its integral role in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Motivated by a wildly adventurous and people-oriented spirit, he has taught and held unpaid tutorials for a short-staffed secondary school and sought to improve the welfare and public health space in his community through advocacy for community service and a continuum of volunteerism with no fewer than ten unpaid roles in local and international organizations. He shares his story up-close with us in his blog, Days in the Life of Victor. Working on health reform for his Millennium fellowship project, he hopes to promote medicine as a social service by organising humanitarian medical outreaches in Nigeria local communities and starting up an academy for research writing and publications in the medical field.
