" Community engagement is the foundation of my approach to my work, whether I am teaching English at the Refugee Dream Center or conducting research focused on improving trauma care in rural Nepal. Through the Millennium Fellowship, I am excited to pursue a community engaged project to address UN Sustainable Development Goals. I am also looking forward to collaborating with a network of similarly passionate peers aiming to create meaningful social change within and beyond campus. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Emergency Preparedness for Refugees
Learning basic first aid empowers refugees with essential skills to handle medical emergencies, enhancing their safety and self-reliance. It fosters independence, supports community health, and can be crucial in situations where professional medical help is delayed or unavailable, ultimately improving their overall well-being and resilience. Our program aims to educate and certify refugees in CPR and Stop The Bleed to improve their patient outcomes before EMS arrival. Through our project, we plan to address these barriers by providing guidance on navigating the emergency healthcare system in the United States. Furthermore, we are looking to equip refugees with the knowledge and skills to address emergency situations through CPR and/or Stop the Bleed training before they are able to access professional help. Our ultimate goal is to reduce refugee concerns and hesitancy regarding seeking emergency health care and to improve overall patient outcomes.
