Millennium Fellowship Project: We Can Initiative
The "WE CAN" initiative aims to call students all over Nigeria and if possible the world at large to be united in carving better and more comfortable spaces for students living with disabilities. The "WE CAN" initiative simply wants to make learning environments as inclusive as possible. We began this journey of promoting inclusive learning on the 25th of february, 2022. Though the idea took shape much earlier when I and some of my friends noticed that out of the numerous young people with disabilities in our city only a very few number are enrolled in higher institutions of learning. The remaining majority were the beggers we frequently saw by the gate of our campuses, in motor parks, markets and other commercial and residential areas. What was scarier was when we discovered that less than five percent of PWDs admitted in our institution graduated. Most of them are withdrawn and even more of them drop out. WE CAN INITIATIVE(WCI) looks for the reasons PWDs drop out of school and most important it finds implementable solutions to tackle them. Because we believe that young people MUST be educated. As students we set out to do th work. Because WE CAN.
About the Millennium Fellow
Barira Abdulfattah Aliyu is a bright young lady from Nigeria, given birth to in the northern region of the country. She grew up in Adamawa, Kano, kaduna and is currently pursing a degree in medicine and sugery at Gombe state University. It is through her stay and travels in numerous northern and southern states in Nigeria that she learnt of the desperate need for healthcare accessibility and the gross lack of inclusion of PWDs in essential parts of the society. It is for these reasons that she began agitating for inclusion, empowerment and infrastructure that will make life easier for PWDs and healthcare accessible to Nigerians, especially those living in rural areas. She continously learns through her journey and hopes that this journey she is about to embark on as a Millennium fellow will equip her with the necessary knowledge to continue advocating and implementing the SDGs she is passionate about in her community. And someday...globally.
