" I am excited to leverage my skill-set to be able to provide many people of different backgrounds the opportunities and access to opportunities in the most competitive industries - increasing social mobility and helping firms to create a more diverse workplace that can succeed in the 21st century. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Improving Social Mobility

This is a project intended to help those from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds to gain access to fundamental training and a 'foot inside the door' of industries, which are hard to penetrate with limited skills and connections. Sectors such as investment banking, law and consulting can be difficult for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain access to internships and graduate roles as these students may lack exposure to these sectors - their application may be less competitive as they lack the relevant experience, which is difficult to obtain or these students may even be unaware of that there are such programs to improve access to these sectors. Currently, many firms have tried to make a conscientious effort to improve access to graduate roles and internships for students from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds, however, there is still a lack of promotion or uptake from students. In addition, there is some stigma attached to these programs that these students had an 'easier' way into these programs. My project aims to improve the awareness of such programs and help upskill students with the technicals to feel that they truly deserve the role and feel more confident in taking part in such programs.

About the Millennium Fellow

Edwin To is a penultimate year Economics student at UCL and current President of UCL Economics and Finance Society (the largest society within UCL with over 2,500 members). Born and raised in London but of Chinese and Malay heritage, Edwin strongly believes that diversity in the workplace is extremely important. That is why, he is trying to improve access to jobs and internship opportunities in the most competitive industries (such as investment banking, private equity and consulting) through his society with training and mentorship sessions. In his free time, he enjoys playing badminton, poker and listening to K-pop.
