" In the words of Martin Luther King, "Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman". Until everyone everywhere has access to the best healthcare, the world cannot be well. The Millennium Fellowship will be a stepping stone for me to achieve this dream. I intend on capitalising on this community of fellows to help drive my commitment and broaden my impact. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Rescue Beats
Rescue Beats is a campaign for good cardiovascular health. It focuses on the prevalent cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria, the most common of which is hypertension. It aims to tackle them through education on managing risks, limiting progression, avoiding complications, and responding to cases of emergencies. Through these health promotion and basic life-saving skills, it empowers vulnerable communities and creates a culture where people take full charge of their health and look out for one another.
About the Millennium Fellow
Ahmad Oyindamola Buhari is a final-year medical student at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, with aspirations of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. From an early age, his desire to help others and his natural inclination toward fixing things drew him to medicine, where he always envisioned himself as a future surgeon.
He is passionate about improving healthcare delivery, particularly for the less privileged. He dreams of narrowing the gaps in healthcare access in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. His focus on cardiovascular diseases stems from their high prevalence in his country and the paucity of surgical specialists in the field.
As an early-career researcher, Ahmad strongly believes in data-driven solutions. He is involved in several research projects, including personal projects and collaborations with organisations like the National Institute for Health Research in Nigeria. He aims to promote global surgery and find innovative solutions to healthcare challenges.
In addition to his academic and research activities, Ahmad has held various leadership positions in his medical student associations. Currently serving as the Senate President, he is preparing himself for future roles in healthcare administration, where he hopes to contribute to the development of progressive and inclusive policies.
The impact Ahmad strives to make in improving health and well-being for all aligns with SDG 3. He envisions himself becoming a leader in global surgery, and until then, he is determined to make whatever contributions he can to improve the lives of others.
