Millennium Fellowship Project: Design Thinking In Healthcare

The design thinking in healthcare project was a virtual session aimed at teaching participants how to apply design thinking principles to innovate and solve healthcare challenges. The session covered the five stages of design thinking—empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test—along with practical strategies for impactful project submissions. Participants were guided on using these principles to address real-world healthcare problems and prepare for events like designathons. Supplementary materials, including slides and templates, were provided to enhance learning, and a WhatsApp group was created for streamlined communication and follow-ups. The project inspired attendees to approach healthcare innovation creatively and confidently. Overall, it equipped them with actionable tools to drive meaningful change in the sector.

About the Millennium Fellow

Saka Kafayat, a final-year medical student at the University of Ilorin, is passionate about using digital
health to address healthcare challenges in resource-limited settings like Nigeria. Her journey began
with winning a 2022 Udacity scholarship for data analysis and interning as a Data Science intern at a
healthcare startup in 2023.
Equipped with certifications in digital health and Google Data Analytics, Kafayat applies the principle
of design-thinking to healthcare problems. In 2023, she led an international team at a digital health
student bootcamp to solve a sexual and reproductive health issue, securing 6th place. She and her
teammate also took first place at a mega-designathon organized by 4 Youth by Youth NGO,
developing a solution for newborn hepatitis B birth-dose vaccination.
Her favorite quotes, "Try again. Fail again. Fail better," by Samuel Beckett, and Steve Jobs' advice on
connecting the dots in retrospect, inspire her perseverance and forward-thinking approach in life.
Kafayat’s diverse experiences in digital health, data analysis, and healthcare innovation positions her
as a promising future leader in medical technology and healthcare solutions.
